Don't play WoW. They charge for game time.
I would suggest Guild Wars. All you have to do is buy the game. No extra or hidden fees. A lot of gameplay, and a very fun community.
If you are not afraid of ridicule and have about 15 bucks a month to throw away, then I highly suggest WoW. I tried it once, loved it, but it is way too addicting and expensive. If you do buy it, you'll soon find out that the expansion packs are 'where it's at' because there is so much more you can do with those.What's a good online game to play?

HuntAndJump is a genetics, showing and stable management game geared towards teens and adults. It uses real color genetics, so you'll probably end up learning a lot!
Everything is at a relaxed pace and you can go days, weeks, months, etc. without logging in and everything will be just fine. You don't have to bother with feeding and training. You can manage a barn with hundreds of horses and not feel overwhelmed at all.
